01. Coming out of the fog
Composed in gratitude and relief that the composer's friend arrived safely at his place in Manchester, despite the wintery fog.
02. Prelude no 2
A pretty little pensive prelude written in 1974 incorporating some aspects of the styles of Fernando Sor and Carulli.
03. Spider's web
Musical and histrionic description of a spider spinning its web, an unsuspecting fly landing in it and getting caught, as is the way of the world. The struggle between spider and fly uses a circular motion of the right hand in quasi rasgueado style and the cries of the fly are repesented by bent artificial harmonics.
04. Variations on Twinkle Twinkle
A set of variations on this well-known tune (also known as "Ah te dirai-je Maman") with one or too cheeky and unexpected moments.
05. Variations on Sweet Kate
Based on the duet Sweet Kate by the Renaissance composer Robert Jones. The singer's frustration about the way Kate treats him is represented by a quasi flamenco-rasgueado section.
06. Romance for Pamela
This was composed for an old friend of the composer who had a particular fondness for internal syncopated harmonies on the piano.
He wrote this for her, to show they can be created on the guitar as well.07. Soliloquy
A thoughtful number, a conversation with the composer's inner self.
08. Calypso
A jolly piece based on calypso rhythms inspired by the composer's time overlooking Petticoat Lane market in London.
09. The Good tempered guitars
The composer wrote this unusual guitar duo way back in 1974 or 1975. It features much use of harmonics and cheeky references to "Au Clair de la Lune". Although the title is a pun on Bach's "Das Wohltemperierte Klavier", it doesn't go through quite so many keys as that great work.
10. Sonata in Ripon
Written during a choir trip to Ripon Cathedral, and inspired partly by the churchy harmonies we were enjoying during that week, complete with an English cadence at the end: so beloved of the alto section in our choir!
11. Blues Rondo
So, the composer thought, what would a classical (or neo-classical) composer do with a Blues idea? This is one possible outcome!
